Secure Calling

We've made it easy to take advantage of Secure Calling using military grade 256-bit advanced end-to-end encryption.

Encryption is made possible by the exchange of digitally signed certificates, also known as public/private key pairs, just like modern secure websites and bank card chip readers — we call this a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

Certificates should always be issued and signed by a third party Trusted Root Certificate Authority.

Our Certificates are renewed every 90 days.

Warning — Absolutely do not trust any service that issues self-signed certificates, it defeats the purpose of third party verification and is simply not proper encryption.

Although it sounds complicated, what's happening with an encrypted connection is very simple — our service encrypts the data using our private key, sends it to your phone, which then decrypts it with the public key, after verifying with the Trusted Root Certificate Authority that it's a valid certificate in good standing.

There's no downside to using Secure Calling. As a matter of fact, since everything is encrypted, it can actually improve performance and audio quality.

When you connect a phone to an extension it registers with your account and maintains that registration at regular intervals. There are three registration types available:

When you enable Secure Calling on an extension with a device that uses automated provisioning and supports TLS with up to date Root Certificates, simply restart the phone, no other steps are required.

For manually configuring devices, register using TLS instead of UDP or TCP and refer to the manufacturers instructions for any additional settings that may be required.

The Case for Secure Calling

Hackers are getting more and more clever every day. With proper end-to-end encryption, you take the opportunity completely away from them.

Note — Even without end-to-end encryption, voip is still an order of magnitude more secure than traditional telephone service, which is quite easily compromised.

Frequently Asked Questions

This sounds complicated, how hard is it to switch to Secure Calling?
If you have supported devices using automatic provisioning, just flip the switch and reboot your phones, done!

Why don't other providers support Secure Calling?
Most will, eventually. It's technically challenging to implement real PKI based encryption.

Will someone listen to your phone calls if you don't use Secure Calling?
Probably not, but however unlikely, with enough effort it is possible.

Should we buy new phones if ours don't support Secure Calling?
Only you can assess your level of risk.
